More Than a Lid: How to Protect Your Hot Tub Cover
Share
Your hot tub cover does more than just keep out leaves and debris. It's a crucial piece of equipment that traps heat, saves you money on energy bills, and protects your spa's shell from the harsh effects of sun and weather. A well-maintained cover can last for years, but a neglected one can become waterlogged, heavy, and ineffective in a hurry.
Giving your cover a little TLC is simple, and it pays off big time in the long run. Here’s what you need to know to extend its life.
The #1 Enemy: Sun and Debris
Your cover is exposed to the elements 24/7. UV rays from the sun break down the vinyl, making it brittle and prone to cracking, while dirt, pollen, and sap can stain and degrade the material.
Routine Cleaning (Monthly):
-
Gently spray the top of the cover with a garden hose to remove any loose dirt and debris.
-
Using a mild soap solution (like a few drops of dish soap in a bucket of water) and a soft cloth or sponge, gently scrub the top of the vinyl.
-
Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
-
Wipe it dry with a clean, soft towel. Avoid letting it air dry in direct sunlight, which can leave water spots.
The Secret Weapon: UV Protectant
This is the most important step for extending the life of your cover. After cleaning the vinyl top, you need to condition it.
-
Frequency: Apply a quality UV protectant every 3-4 months, right after your deep clean.
-
What to use: Use a product specifically designed for marine-grade or outdoor vinyl. Never use an automotive, silicone, or oil-based product (like Armor All). These can degrade the vinyl's stitching and top coat, causing more harm than good.
-
How to apply: Spray a light mist of the protectant onto the cover and wipe it in with a clean cloth, just like waxing a car.
This protective layer acts like sunscreen for your cover, preventing fading, cracking, and drying from sun exposure.
Don't Forget the Underside
The bottom of your cover is in constant contact with your water's chemicals and steam.
-
When you have the cover off for cleaning, lightly spray the underside with water.
-
Wipe it down with a clean cloth to remove any built-up condensation or residue.
-
Leave the cover off for an hour or two to let the underside air out completely. This helps prevent mildew growth.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Never sit or stand on your cover. They are not designed to hold weight and the foam core will crack.
-
Don't use abrasive cleaners or brushes. These will scratch and damage the vinyl.
-
Be careful with sharp objects. When shoveling snow or clearing debris, be mindful of the cover to avoid punctures.
-
Don't drag it. When removing the cover, use a cover lifter or have two people lift it to avoid dragging it on concrete or decks, which will tear the seams.
