The Foundation of Clean Water: Understanding pH and Alkalinity in Your Hot Tub

Water chemistry can seem complex, but the truth is, a healthy and sparkling clean hot tub comes down to understanding two fundamental concepts: Total Alkalinity and pH.

Think of them as the foundation of your water care. Get them right, and everything else—from your sanitizer's effectiveness to the comfort of your water—falls into place.

First, What is pH?

You might remember pH from science class. It’s simply a scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or basic a liquid is.

  • 7 is neutral.

  • Below 7 is acidic.

  • Above 7 is basic (or alkaline).

For a hot tub, the "sweet spot" for pH is between 7.4 and 7.6. Why this specific range?

  • Bather Comfort: It’s very close to the natural pH of the human eye, which means no stinging or irritation.

  • Sanitizer Efficiency: Chlorine or bromine works most effectively in this range, killing bacteria and contaminants.

  • Protecting Your Equipment: A balanced pH prevents corrosion of metal parts (like your heater) and the formation of scale on your spa's surfaces and jets.

What is Total Alkalinity (TA)?

This is the one most people miss, but it's arguably the most important. Total Alkalinity is the anchor for your pH.

Think of it as a buffer. It’s a measure of the dissolved particles in the water that help it resist changes in pH. Without a proper TA level, your pH will swing wildly up and down every time a new substance is introduced—whether that's a bather, a few raindrops, or a dose of sanitizer. This is often called "pH bounce."

The ideal range for Total Alkalinity is between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm).

The Golden Rule of Water Balancing

  1. Test Your Water: Use a quality test strip and get readings for both Total Alkalinity and pH.

  2. Adjust Total Alkalinity First:

    • If TA is low: Add an Alkalinity Increaser according to the package directions.

    • If TA is high: Add a dose of pH Reducer (this will lower both TA and pH).

  3. Circulate: Run the jets for at least 20-30 minutes to let the chemicals fully dissolve and mix.

  4. Retest and Adjust pH: Once your TA is in the 80-120 ppm range, check your pH. Now, you can fine-tune it:

    • If pH is low: Add a pH Increaser.

    • If pH is high: Add a pH Reducer.
